"America has Florida and Austria the Alps. Germany has Mecklenburg-Vorpommern." This is how the weekly journal "Welt am Sonntag" recently portrayed our state.
Introduction
Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania
Capital: Schwerin
Bigest City: Rostock
Large Cities:
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern – it's the deep blue lakes and the green meadows. Rape in bloom covers the landscape like a yellow robe and, as night falls, the lights of the fashionable promenades scintillate like an evening gown. The temperament of lively towns mixed with the quietude of idyllic villages and swathes of land are a picture full of harmony.
The inhabitants love their land – and so do the great number of guests. The rates of growth in tourism have been enormous: since 1993 the number of overnights has risen from 7.6 to about 24.5 million, the number of beds has increased from 77,000 to 170,000. In the meantime Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has become the most popular tourist destination in all of Germany.
